Introduction
Fusiliers' demo games at 2008 Call
to Arms
The Kapiti Fusiliers were well represented amongst the demo games
at this year's Call to Arms, held at St Patrick's College, Wellington,
on the weekend of 16/17 August 2008. The photos in this article show some
of the demo games from the first day, particularly those put on by Kapiti
Fusiliers. Click on these photos to see them fullsized.
Iraq War game

Terrain specially built for the sole purpose of putting on a one-off
display game is not yet a common sight at New Zealand conventions. But
constructing terrain for a specific battle, without the restrictions placed
when making multi-use terrain, can look very spectacular, as you can see
from Fusilier Greg's stunning set-upcomplete with scratchbuilt houses.
A very eye-catching display that would not be out of place in any of the
big international events!

Marlburian game

Fusiliers Chris and Murray, along with a team of other players, hosted
an incredible 6mm Marlburian game. Despite the small size of the figures,
this was one of the biggest tables at Call to Arms. The long lines of
troops facing each other along the length of the table gave a realistic
perspective that is offten missing from wargames.

Pirates game
Fusiliers
Roly and Scott put on a series of Legends of the High Seas games,
featuring their 28mm Foundry pirates. They were able to play
four complete scenarios through the day: 'steal the ship', 'boarding action',
'kidnap the governor's daughter', and 'X marks the spot'. A write-up of
the four games will be found in a subsequent article on this site in the
next few days.

One of the scenarios involved a treasure hunt on a deserted island.
Seven Years War game

Fusiliers Terry, Peter and Rhys put on a colourful game depicting the
Battle of Gross Jagersdorf during the Seven Years War. They used exquisitely-painted
28mm figures (mainly Front Rank) and Piquet rules.
Dad's Army game

Now, this game did not involve any Fusiliers, but I could not resist
adding a shot of it to this article anyway, because it was truly magnificent.
It showed the town of Walmington-on-Sea, bravely guarded by Dad's Army
(and, yes, all of Captain Mainwaring's platoon were faithfully portrayed,
as were many other recognisable characters from the TV series). Simply
suberb!
